We Are Public presents The Slide Show, a new recurring series in their own bite-sized venue space in De School. The concept is simple, three makers will tell a visual story of their work and their lives. Presenters can use as many images and whatever type of images they like, as long as they follow three ground rules: the first image should date from their childhood, the last should represent their latest achievement and their story should take 15 minutes. This first edition of The Slide Show will feature artist Ruth van Beek, filmmaker Hanna van Niekerk, and author, columnist and philosopher Kasper van Royen. DJ Dirty Shirt will provide tunes in between each presentation and the bar will be open all night.
About the guest speakers
Van Beek conjures up images from her archive of found photographs, intervening in them by folding, cutting or painting on them. Van Niekerk's first feature film If the Sun Explodes, screening in cinemas from mid-February onward, follows a young couple on a journey that find themselves confronted with the bigger questions in life. Van Royen had his debut last year with En toen kwam Annika ("And then came Annika"), a collection of personal essays in which he reflects on his life as a philosopher and father. Until recently, Van Royen was a columnist for Hard//Hoofd.
Please note: This edition will not be suitable for English speakers, as the presentations will take place in Dutch.
