The scale on which art can be perceived ranges from communal to intimate, from collective to secluded. And, interestingly enough, it can be all at the same time, just like the experience in a nightclub. You can be on your own on a crowded dance floor or form a bond with very few. Likewise, you can embrace the collective experience and forget about yourself for a bit. It is all in flux: deciding for one way does not mean to refuse to, at some point, decide for another.
In her works, artist Karolina Halatek embraces all of the possibilities mentioned above, but in case of what is going to be shown at De School, you have to accept to be on your own for a while. Come closer and engage with the work. You can rest your busy mind and reset the synapses. And afterwards, it will influence your way of perceiving everything around you. The afterglow will be individual, but still shared by everyone who steps into the light.

And maybe the work will even hypnotize you, just like the repetitive music that is played in the basement. And suddenly, time does not play a role anymore: everything is happening at once. 

Q: How do you reflect on the environment your work is going to be shown in, in this case: a nightclub?  

A: Wherever there are people, art can be perceived. The work I am going to show is based on strobe lights, which are often associated with nightclubs. I expect the rhythm of the lights and the nightclub environment of De School to create a new layer and bring the work and its environment closer together.

Q: Do you feel/have a connection to nightlcubs?

A: At the moment, not so much. Back in the days I used to go to clubs more often. I also worked in an underground venue for a while, where the set design changed each weekend according to a new, unique theme.

Q: What are you looking for the most in nightlife?

A: I especially like nightlife when it is happening in the outdoors, having the freedom to spend warm summer nights in nature. That, or some unusual architecture.

Q: How would you describe your artistic agenda?

A: The agenda is unknown. Doing my best and seeing what happens.

Q: What takes longer: coming up with an idea for an artwork or realizing it?

A: Definitely the idea, conceptualization, reasoning, testing if the idea can be realized technically and observing if it merges with the higher purpose. Realizing the work is the final stage of the whole process.

Q: What is your favorite time of the day, and why?

A: The night, when I can finally take my time to read, watch, meet people and be free.

Q: What are you looking forward to the most during the 62 consecutive hours that your work is going to be shown in De School?

A: New situations.
